Are you living with someone who has Special Educational Needs (SEN)? Same here! I share my home and heart with an incredible autistic individual, and I must say, it can feel like quite the rollercoaster ride, can’t it?
Some days, I feel like I can take on the world, and other days, I am just happy to get everyone fed and dressed. But if there is one thing I have learned, it is this: looking after ourselves isn’t optional – it is essential. For those of us supporting someone with SEN, self-care is a necessity.
So, grab a cup of tea (or whatever you fancy), and let’s have a proper chat about self-care. I promise it’s worth your time!
Why Self-Care is So Important for Us SEN community
Let’s be honest for a moment. Supporting someone with SEN, whether it’s autism or another condition, can sometimes feel like running a marathon whilst juggling all sorts of other tasks. Tiring? Absolutely. Fulfilling? Without a doubt. But here’s the thing: if we do not take care of ourselves, we simply cannot be the superheroes we need to be.
Think of it this way: you know how on planes they always tell you to put your own oxygen mask on first? It is exactly the same here. By looking after ourselves, we are making sure we are in the best possible shape to support our loved ones.
Self-Care Strategies That Actually Work (Trust Me, I’ve Tried Them!)
Acknowledge Your Emotions (All of Them)
It’s perfectly normal to have days where you feel frustrated, guilty, or completely exhausted. Supporting someone with SEN is tough, and recognising these emotions doesn’t make you a bad partner or community member; it makes you human. Be kind to yourself and allow yourself to feel whatever emotions come up.
Build Your Support Network
You have probably heard the phrase, “It takes a village,” and it’s true. Connecting with others who understand your situation can make all the difference.
- Join SEN Support Groups: There are many fantastic online and in-person communities where you can connect with others in similar situations. It’s like finding a group of people who really understand.
- Talk to a Professional: Speaking to a counsellor or therapist who understands SEN can offer valuable guidance. They often have useful strategies for managing stress and improving your wellbeing.
- Lean on Family and Friends: Don’t hesitate to ask for help. Even small things, like someone offering to do the shopping or helping out for an hour, can provide much-needed respite.
Make Time for Yourself
If you find a spare moment, take it for yourself. Even a little bit of “me time” can do wonders for your wellbeing. Here are a few ideas:
- Go for a walk or a run to get some fresh air and clear your mind.
- Enjoy a yoga session to stretch your body and relax your mind.
- Try a gong bath to experience deep relaxation through soothing sound waves.
- Or simply unwind in a bath, letting a fizzy aromatherapy bath bomb provide a luxurious, indulgent soak for your body and soul.
- Write in Your Wellbeing Journal. Taking time to reflect on your thoughts, emotions, and experiences in a journal is a powerful way to manage stress. It helps you gain perspective, track your progress, and can serve as a safe outlet for expressing what’s on your mind. Journaling regularly helps you stay connected to your own needs, which is a vital part of self-care.
You’ve Got This!
Remember, looking after yourself is not selfish – it’s necessary. By focusing on your own wellbeing, you are ensuring you can continue being the best possible supporter for your loved one with SEN.
Every family’s journey is different, so take your time to discover what self-care methods work best for you. Your wellbeing matters, and by prioritising it, you are fostering a happier and healthier environment for everyone.
So here’s to you – the amazing SEN superhero! I hope these tips help you feel more supported and capable because you truly deserve it. We are all in this together, and you’ve got this!
